Chisago Lakes Baptist students celebrate 'I Love to Read' month
Daily prizes were awarded to the first student who found a small dog named Winn Dixie hidden somewhere in the school. For ten minutes each day, students were invited to “stop, drop, and read.” Occasionally a mystery reader read from a well- known book over the loudspeaker. Each week, the names of children who returned their reading logs were put into a drawing for one of a dozen books.
January 23 was a Family Fun Day. The afternoon began with a magic show presented by magician, Norm Barnhart. Several students were invited to help with the tricks, and all were amazed with his skills. Other activities included a Book Walk, Book BINGO, Puppet Theater, Read Alouds, Stories on video, a craft area, and board games.
Friday, January 29, students were rewarded with a pajama day, which included watching the movie “Because of Winn Dixie” while enjoying popcorn and pop. Michael Elliott, school administrator, proved to be a good sport and wore his pajamas to school.
Amanda Weber and Kadence Stephan, 6th graders, tied for first place and topped the charts by reading over 5900 minutes each and receiving a new 2016 Guiness Book of World Records. Tim McCullough, 4th grade, came in second, reading 2930 minutes and third place went to Joey McCullough, 1st grade, reading 2488 minutes. Top readers for each class were: Lincoln Jewson, K4 preschool; Hannah King, kindergarten; Joey McCullough, 1st grade; Ellie Lee, 2nd grade; Aaron Brink, 3rd grade; Tim McCullough, 4th grade; Laine DeVries, 5th grade, and Amanda Weber and Kadence Stephan, 6th grade. Top readers received a new book, and an award.
Earlier in the school year grandparents and parents sponsored over 100 new books for the school’s library.
