Both teams finished in fourth place, two spots out of the state tournament team competition, and they only qualified two individuals for the single competition.
But, those two competitors have a real shot at a state championship.
Ellie Frischmon finished second in the section and was fifth at last year’s state tournament. She finished her red course run in 40.40 seconds, which was third best overall and her blue course run in 35.30, good for second best on the day.
Her combined time of 1:15.70 was good enough for second in an elite field of skiers. The section championship went to McKenzie Bremel of Hermantown. Bremel and Nellie Ide of The Blake School and Juliana Damberg of Mounds View will be the main competition to Frischmon’s quest for a state title.
She’ll be at the familiar hills of Giants Ridge, but the tiniest factors can change a run by seconds, so it will be an interesting race.
On the boys side, there will be the same amount of intrigue as Wildcat junior Anders Brown will make another appearance at the state tournament. He finished in fourth at last years race, but he came in fourth at the section meet this year. He was behind Ryan Nordin of Duluth East, Thomas Heren of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton and Austin Danelski of Hermantown.
Brown’s first run was 35.40 seconds on the red course, which was good enough for third place. On the blue course, he got down the hill in 36.60 seconds, which was fourth best on that run. His combined time of 1:12.00 was just .55 seconds off the winning time posted by Nordin.
Brown has always found another gear at the state tournament, but pushing to these ultra fast times comes with the risks of losing an edge. There will be plenty at stake when Frischmon and Brown take the hills on Wednesday, February 10.
Boys
As for the rest of the racers, John Frischmon had a disappointing end to his illustrious ski career. He had made the state tournament last year and done well and was looking to make a bigger splash this year, but he stumbled just a bit on the red course. A half dozen seconds costs a skier a whole heck of a lot in a section this competitive and despite only six seconds between his two runs, his red course hiccup sent him to 64th place on that run with a time of 42.62 seconds while his 37.80 second run on the blue course was good enough for 10th place.
Ryan Mower had a nice, consistent section tournament and has a strong base to build on for next year. He finished the red course in 38.55 seconds and the blue course in 38.90 seconds, which was 19th and 18th respectively. The combined totals put him in 17th place overall and not far off of a state tournament berth.
August Brown rounded out the varsity scoring for Chisago Lakes with a 39th place finish.
The Wildcats accumulated 401 team points, which left them 39 points off of Hermantown’s winning pace, but just 11 off of Forest Lake’s pace, who took the second spot to the state tournament with 412 team points.
Girls
The girls got some strong supporting performances, but they also fell just 11 points away from a state tournament bert. Hannah Stec came in 20th place after a 44.94 run on the red course and a 38.27 second run in blue.
Hannah Janzig’s times gave her a 31st place finish with a combined time of 1:24.97. That total time was only 1.7 seconds behind Stec, but the place differential was 11 spots, showing how competitive the section got. Alicia Sandberg finished up the Wildcats scoring with a 42nd place finish.
The ‘Cats tallied 381 points while Cook County won with 421.5 points. Stillwater, who claimed the second state tournament berth, scored 392.5 points.
