In addition to the regional History Day project competition, there is also a research paper competition. Three middle school students were selected to compete in this division as well. They are Jordan Waldenberg (Subject: Ella Fitzgerald), Kate Carlson (Harlem Renaissance), and Reagan Irons (Title IX). Irons received an Honorable Mention for her paper.
The History Day program is a National Program where students research a particular topic that fits a national theme. This year’s theme is Exploration, Encounter and Exchange in History.
Students present their research in a number of ways. Students may create a display board, perform a dramatic presentation, make a video or power point presentation, write a research paper, or develop a historical web page. At the state competition, two projects from each category are then chosen to represent Minnesota at the National Competition which is held in June at the University of Maryland in College Park.
North Branch Area Middle School had an extremely successful day on Saturday earning three Honorable Mention Awards and six qualifiers for the State History Day competition. Receiving Honorable Mention Awards for their outstanding projects this year were: Alexis Hunter, Sophie Tucker and Julia Van Dyke.
