In an emotional address to the team on Monday, May 23, boys basketball Head Coach Chris Gargaro announced he was resigning as the Chisago Lakes boys basketball coach and retiring from coaching high school basketball altogether.

The decision comes as a surprise, as the Wildcats were fresh off their first state tournament berth in over 20 years. Although that team was graduating four of it’s five starters, the program has  been established a premiere program in Section 7AAA and the Mississippi 8 Conference.

Gargaro coached in Chisago Lakes for four years and compiled a 62-49 record, but his teams were on the uptick, going 42-16 over the last two seasons.

Gargaro let his players know in a meeting on Monday and then sent an e-mail out to parents on Tuesday. “There have been many anxious moments as well as sleepless nights over the past few weeks as I arrived at my decision,” he said in the letter. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years as your head coach and the time that I have spent at Chisago Lakes has been some of the most rewarding of my coaching career. I realize though, that it is the right time for me to step away and spend more time enjoying my wonderful family who has been so supportive of me during my coaching career.

“I step away being extremely proud of what we have accomplished in just a short time, and with the knowledge and confidence that with so many great kids, parents and supporters; the program will continue to flourish.”

“Chris has been a friend of mine for 20 years. When we brought him here, I knew he would do a great job working with our basketball community and our kids,” Chisago Lakes Activities Director Neil Fletcher said. “Every student coached by Chris is better for it.”

Kugel in as Chisago Lakes girls soccer coach
As one coach departed, another was hired, but in a different sport and different season.

The girls soccer program, which had been searching for a coach since Chris Haggerty’s resignation at the end of the year, found their man in Wayne Kugel.

Kugel has been the goalie coach for Chisago Lakes for the past three years and has nine more years of coaching experience on the high school and club level.

“We are excited about bringing Wayne in as our new head girls soccer coach,” Fletcher noted. “Wayne is highly respected in the soccer community. Not only for his knowledge and techniques, but also for being great with kids.”

The Wildcats finished 7-8-1 in the fall season. Kugel’s daughter, Grace, a junior, led the team with 18 goals last year, which was tied for the 17th best total in the state.
