Very active in the community, Mr. Wangen was a past president and board member of Festival Theater in St. Croix Falls, WI, and for many years was active in the Taylors Falls Historical Society. Many in Taylors Falls will recall Daryl playing the part of “Mr. Folsom” in the annual Lighting Festival parade and various historical reenactments, such as greeting “Swedish immigrants” at the Taylors Falls boat landing. Daryl played an important role in the preservation of the W.H.C. Folsom Home, now a State Historical site. For many years he was organizing the pie and ice cream raffles and the “Christmas at Folsom House” events important in funding its continued maintenance. Daryl was in particular known as an avid collector of antiques and curios, renowned in the Twin Cities area for his fine eye for “quality” and his many collections of small items of historical interest. Many of the items he collected have been donated to the Taylors Falls Historical Society, including an extensive collection of Taylors Falls memorabilia. With his partner William Scott, Daryl helped restore and preserve three fine Greek revival homes in the Angel Hill Historic District.
Before moving to Taylors Falls, Mr. Wangen was raised in Albert Lea, MN. He studied at Waldorf College where he received his B.A. in music and where he was reputed to be a fine tenor. A member of the Lutheran Church he was a serious student of his faith. Mr. Wangen served in the United States Army. A proud Norwegian, Mr. Wangen was a unique character who will be missed by all who knew him.
