The Wildcats lost 44-7 to the Elks, starting 0-2 for the first time since 2011 when they had back-to-back losses to Holy Angels and Spring Lake Park.
The Wildcats were in trouble from the jump against Elk River. Their deceptive rushing attack went for over 500 yards in a 42-0 shutout over Brainerd in the season opener, and the Elks gashed Chisago Lakes for huge chunks of yardage.
Nick Rice led a cavalcade of running backs for Elk River that gained a lot of yards. Rice had 141 yards on seven carries, Sherrod Kpahn had 101 yards on six carries, Adam Nelson picked up 66 yards in one scamper and Sam Gibas had 48 yards on six carries.
It all tallied up to 477 yards rushing for the Elks.
Chisago Lakes, meanwhile, couldn’t match the Elk River firepower. They returned volleys with Matt Mohr, who had a good night, rushing the ball 12 times for 100 yards, but the ‘Cats couldn’t find paydirt.
They eventually got a score when junior quarterback Mitchell Barrett evaded pressure from the Elk River defense and found senior Arran Hickcox for a jump ball in the end zone. The 17-yard touchdown was far too little, far too late, as Elk River was already up 44-0 in the fourth quarter.
Peter Vitalis led the defense, making nine tackles from his safety spot.
This is rivalry week for Chisago Lakes. They’ll travel to in-county rival North Branch on Friday night to face the Vikings, who haven’t scored a point yet this season, but have had a stingy defense.
