Vikings keep on trucking, Ertl and Olson break school records
When healthy, they are one of the top team’s in the state, but one injury can drastically affect their performance. They had their first major injury of the year when Michaela Egan suffered a concussion, but they’ve been able to stay strong despite that.
At the Princeton Invitational, the girls finished second to a very strong Perham team, and it was by only a half point.
They got one first place finish on the day, with senior Annie Gladitsch scoring a 9.55 on the floor exercise. Keeley Ertl finished fourth with a 9.3.
On vault, Ertl and Alexys Olson finished third and fourth, respectively. Ertl scored a 9.25 and Olson a 9.15.
That pair struck again in the uneven bars, tying for second place overall with matching scores of 8.85.
On the balance beam, Paige Bauer stuck a very nice routine to score a 9.3 and finish in third place in the event. Olson scored a 9.1 to finish fourth.
Ertl ended up finishing third in the all around with some talented gymnasts just edging her for the top spot.
Perham tallied 142.55 points to win the meet while North Branch scored a 142.05 in second place.
The girls kept their momentum rolling in a Mississippi 8 Conference match up against Monticello. Despite being without Egan for the whole meet and Olson for two events, the team still scored 140.8 and broke two individual school records.
Ertl broke the school floor record with a 9.675 and Olson broke the balance beam record with a 9.55.
The Vikings even got some solid contributions from regular junior varsity competitors. Ashley Robillard, who was performing in place of Olson on the vault, scored a very nice 9.0 to keep the Vikings on pace.
On the strength of her record-breaking floor and a first on vault and second on beam, Ertl won the all around with a 36.375.
“Despite the injuries we have continued to have success,” Head Coach Chris Johnson said.
