Wildcats get first dual win of the year over Princeton; sixth at River Falls
The Gymcats got their first dual win of the year when they beat the Princeton Tigers 127.95-111.675. The mark was also their high score of the season to this point.
Their top events were the floor exercise and vault, while their struggles came on the uneven bars and the balance beam.
On the vault, Callie Schlegel and Savannah Gorski led the way for CL. Schlegel scored an 8.525 while Gorski scored an 8.35.
Izzy Hindt was the star on the floor, scoring an 8.75 to lead CL to a 33.15 in the event.
Seventh grader Claudia Stipe had some of her best performances of the year on the bars and beam, she just didn’t get much support in either event. She scored an 8.4 on the uneven bars and an 8.425 on the balance beam. No one else on the team was over eight in either event.
“We still need to stay on the beam,” Head Coach Brett Kjos said. “We just have too many falls and it’s hurting our score.”
In the all around, Stipe set a personal record with a 33.225 and Gorski scored a 29.975, which was hampered by her 6.5 beam routine.
“The girls are working hard, though, and they’re increasing their scores every meet,” Kjos said happily.
River Falls Invitational
The girls returned to the River Falls Invite for the first time in four years and finished in sixth place out of 10 teams. “It’s around where I expected us to finish,” Kjos said. “We could’ve gotten fifth if we stuck all of our routines.”
The best news for Kjos was that the beam score was the ‘Cats highest of the year. He decided to bring up two junior varsity beam routines from Lydia Trandahl and Anika Zins. “They’ve been performing very well and I decided to move them up for RF and they both stuck their routines,” he said. “It was a great way to start the meet.”
Trandahl scored a 7.9 on her routine and Zins a 7.8. Stipe put up another 8.4 to lead the way in the event.
In the vault event, Schlegel stuck an 8.45 performance and Stipe had a 8.325 to supplement Schlegel.
On the uneven bars, Stipe was Chisago Lakes’ top score with a 7.5, and that included a fall on her dismount. “She has been working on a new dismount, but it’s not quite ready yet,” Kjos said after the stumble. “It’s excellent that she went for it and hopefully she’ll have it down by the section meet.”
On the floor exercise, the ‘Cats got a scare when Gorski hit her head during warm ups. It forced senior Maddie Audette into the lineup at the last second. “Maddie only had about four minutes to warm up her routine,” Kjos said. “But she did an excellent job filling in when we needed it the most.”
Hindt and Stipe were CL’s top scorers in the event, with Hindt scoring an 8.55 and Stipe an 8.45. Trandahl and Natalie Silver each scored over eight in the event to help CL to their top score of the meet.
As a team, the ‘Cats scored 126.025, finishing in sixth. River Falls won the meet with a score of 136.425.
