Roger moved to southwestern Michigan in 1940 and attended a two room school until the eighth grade. He then moved to an 80 acre farm three miles southwest of Chisago City. Roger enjoyed driving the tractor. He graduated from Chisago City High School in 1957, where he was also on the football team. He attended the University of Minnesota for two years and went into construction with his father building spec homes as well as rental fourplexes in Russel Beach. He joined the Army Reserves out of Cambridge, Minnesota and trained for winter operations – skiing all day long on his two week annual training at Fort Ripley. In 1971 he met the new teacher in town, Beverly Cederstrom. They were married in 1973.
Going to where the work was, he found carpenter work building taconite plants on the Iron Range. While there, he became a millwright because it offered more of a challenge.
Roger and his father built the Midwest One Bank in 1979 which was also the year Roger and Beverly’s son Steig was born. The next years were very productive with Roger continuing to be a millwright, all the while building a log cabin in Bayfield, Wisconsin and the house in Lindstrom. During this time they were blessed with the birth of a daughter Charlotte. Roger was also an avid hunter throughout his lifetime, enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Millwright Local 548.
Roger is preceded in death by parents Seth and Jennie Sandgren; and father-in-law Harley Cederstrom. He is survived by wife Beverly; son Steig (Molly); daughter Charlotte (Tim); four grandchildren Wyatt and Lacy Borders and Oskar and Bente Sandgren; sisters Mary Toman and Carol Dahlquist; mother-in-law Betty Lou Cederstrom; sisters-in-law Joyce Nelson, Carole Pierson, Diane LeBlanc; and many nieces and nephews.
