Irvin, a decorated veteran, served for three years during World War II as a Corporal in the United States Marines. He endured some horrendous battles in the South Pacific and was awarded three Purple Hearts for his service and heroism.
Following the war, Irvin was employed for many years at Cornelius Corporation, but he finished his career in the tool and die trade at Honeywell, Inc., where he worked for 23 years. After retirement he volunteerd for many years with Christian Conciliation Service, where he counseled people who were experiencing conflict, helping them to potentially avoid the legal system.
Irvin will be remembered as a man of deep faith. He loved his Savior, was a student of Scripture and enthusiastically shared his beliefs with family and friends. He was also a man devoted to his family, avidly interested in the lives of his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He was a good “question asker,” and, more importantly, a good listener. Unlike many of his generation, he expressed affection freely, often saying “I love you.” Irvin will also be remembered for his quick wit and delightful sense of humor, which he maintained to the end. He was also an avid fisherman, having fished over 100 different lakes with his fishing partner, his son, David.
Irvin married Delcie Dellwo (deceased) in 1947. They had four children; son Steven (Kathleen), Oak Park, IL, son David (Shirley), Harris, MN, daughter Nancy (Gregg) Hawkinson, Chisago City and son John (Cheryl Kaufenberg, Golden Valley), Center City. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A service celebrating Irvin’s long and impactful life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lindstrom, Minnesota June 3. Meet with the family beginning at 10 a.m., with the service at 11.
The family would like to express appreciation to Chisago Fairview Home Care and the Minneapolis VA Hospital for outstanding care. Also, to the staff at Ecumen, Chisago City, and St. Croix Hospice, both of which served Irvin and his family with excellence.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Irvin’s name to his church or St. Croix Hospice. Grace Berean Fellowship, 419 4th St., Centuria, WI 54824. St. Croix Hospice, 6041 Main Street, Suite F, North Branch, MN, 56056.
