The Wildcats boys’ soccer team had a tough draw in their opening round game in the state tournament –  they had to play the best Class A team in the state, the Totino Grace Eagles.  The Eagles stymied the Wildcat offense while scoring three goals in the first half and one in the second to beat the Wildcats 4-0.  The game was played at Farmington High School on Tuesday, October 24.  The loss ended the season for the Wildcats.

In the 17th minute of the first half, a pass came into the Wildcat box from the right side and All-State sophomore Stevenson Lamarre one-touched it into the net for a 1-0 lead.  Ten minutes later,  Lamarre broke in from the left side and ripped a left-footer inside the short post to make the score 2-0.    Later in the half, Wildcat goalkeeper Reece Lawlor made a nice save.  The ball bounced to the penalty spot.  None of the Wildcat defenders were there to clear it away and All-State junior Herbert Endeley ripped it into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.  The Eagles added another goal later in the second half to make the final score 4-0.

Wildcat head coach Mark Leigh said “They are just a great team and they have a couple of very high level players.  If you look at a team like that, every player on the field and a good number on the bench are as good as the best players on our team.  They have tremendous technical skills.  They can all trap, pass and head the ball well.  In the second half, with their two stars out, we were able to be more competitive.”

Soccer Notes
After his 16th season as head coach – he has been the Wildcat head coach for all but their first season – Leigh is retiring.  We will recap Leigh’s career and legacy in an upcoming issue of the Press.
