Telephone contest scam resurfaces
There is a Publishers’ Clearinghouse-related phone contest scam making the rounds.  Two local people lost good sized amounts of money when responding to a notification by phone that they had won the sweepstakes, and they must send money to claim the prize.  You will NEVER BE ASKED to send money to legitimately claim a prize.

The annual Hay Days spectacular near Almelund, September 9 and 10 took place with few incidents, deputies report. A couple of minor thefts of snowmobile riding gear, a medical incident and an intoxicated driver took down a tape style-electrical fencing strip.

September 10 Lakes Area Police were dispatched to a report of a feral cat attack hurting a little girl in Lindstrom. The girl went to the emergency room with scratches, etc. The authorities were told the neighborhood/ family would try to capture the animal and let police know. Incident was reported about 8 p.m.

The switching around of letters on outdoor signs was a favorite target of mischief for the lead character in the Captain Underpants children’s book series...and may have inspired a copycat here.

Authorities dealt with a suspect re-arranging the moveable letters on Rod’s, a gas station/convenience store sign in Almelund. and making new words.

One tobacco violation at Chisago Lakes High School reported.

September 9

Theft of 14-foot aluminum jon boat from Franconia Landing.  Chain was cut.

September 8 a crash at Hwy. 8 near Isabel and the lights. No information avaiable, state patrol was writing.  Reported at 3:35 p.m.
A counterfeit $50 bill taken at Brink’s.

September 7 a caller reported swatiska shapes carved into plastic slide at Lions Park in Lindstrom.

September 6
A case of pulltabs reported stolen from Triple T Pub and Grub in Rush City. A suspect was interviewed and investigation continues.

Complaints led authorities to a parcel on Trulson Road. The sheriff’s department has given the property owner two months to remove 14 junk vehicles. The investigator is also working with county zoning as it was also noted small cabins that would require permits (more than 120 square feet) constructed or being built, and a tipi, and pond digging activity.

Fraud and theft of mail go hand-in-hand
A check put in a mailbox for postal delivery was apparently stolen, “washed” and a new amount entered. The check writer saw a huge amount withdrawn and notified authorities. The check had been written out to T-Mobile but was cashed by a woman who sheriff’s investigators are investigating.  When putting mail out for the postman to pickup it’s best not to let envelopes sit unwatched for any length of time.  Thieves can steal the mail, erase ink from checks and re-write the dollar amount and the payable party --  while your signature remains.

Two-county pursuit in stolen vehicle case
Deputies engaged in a high speed pursuit,  identified by running the plates as possibly stolen. It went northbound on County Hwy. 30, past Hwy. 95,  Sept. 7 at nearly 11 p.m. The black-colored Blazer was accompanied by a Dodge Ram pickup, also appeared to be involved as stolen.

Upon entering Harris-- the Ram turned off onto 440th (Galaxy) and later went off the road.  The occupant fled but was located by a K9 unit. This truck also came up as stolen out of Isanti County.  A 36-year-old Rush City man was apprehended.

The other truck continued northbound into Pine County, still pursued by Chisago County.  Pine County and state patrol gave assistance and the truck finally pulled off nearby Grand Casino in Hinckley.  A 20-year-old Hinckley man was apprehended.  This truck was stolen out of Washington County, authorities said.
