John served in the army as a paratrooper with the 517th during World War II, earning a purple heart and a bronze star. He used the G.I. bill to attend Kansas City School of Watchmaking. Following his apprentice training in Duluth, he opened a jewelry store in Hinckley, MN. There he met Charlotte Fitch, and on June 28th, 1953 they were married.
After running a business in Shell Lake, WI, they moved to Lindstrom, MN. In 1955, the Time Gift Shop was established. There you would find John repairing watches, clocks, and jewelry or ready to visit about fine china, diamonds, Swiss watches, and German cuckoo clocks.
John enjoyed golfing, motorcycles, and family. Often you would find him at sporting events supporting children and grandchildren alike. His personal faith in Jesus Christ was always a high priority. He was witnessing of his faith to the nurses in the hospital just a week before his passing.
John is survived by his wife Charlotte Gulbranson; children, Ki (Margo) Gulbranson, Joel (Sherri) Gulbranson, Laurie (Helmut) Teichert, Christy (Ron) Gotzman, and Gus (Judy) Gulbranson; grandchildren: John, Shiloh, Per, Hans, and Nils Gulbranson, Jeremy Slocum, Justina (Ben) Nikolai, Leslie (Marshall) Neipert, Tyler, James, and Daniel (Cherishe) Hane, Kara (Vince) Pardo, Karla (Nate) Henderson, Nick, Jessie, and Kristen Gulbranson; great grandchildren, Gracie Nikolai, Finley and Bridger Neipert, Aiden and Ian Pardo, Kennedy and Chase Henderson.
