Operators of multi- generation farm named Chisago County Farm Family of the Year
The Sandberg farmstead has been in the same family for four generations. It qualified to be listed as a “Century Farm” in 1989.
There are three brothers managing the farm: John, Dale and Carl-- who have divided up what needs to get done with everybody taking responsibility for some part of the operation.
Dale and Ann reside in the original farmhouse. They have two daughters Christina and Alicia. Dale handles crop planting and harvest, plus handling young stock needs--along with Ann and their daughters. John is in charge of milking and cow care. Carl feeds the stock and also helps with field work for crops of corn, hay and soybeans.
There are 85 cows in a free-stall barn, milked in a herringbone parlor. The Sandbergs raise their own heifers and finish the bull calves as fat steers.
According to the University of Minnesota Farm Family program news release, the Sandbergs “...work to find ways to make farming viable for the next generation.” They are active in 4H, and Dale and Ann are also involved in Special Olympics.
