Lakes Area Police squad collided with a deer near 14 and 338th reported about 7 p.m. No word on extent of damage. A sheriff’s patrol squad also had a deer encounter, Dec 27. Car is in North Branch for repairs.
December 28 Lakes Area Police cited a 43-year-old woman for theft of liquor from the Lindstrom Muni On-Sale.
Wednesday, December 27 the Lakes Area Police, Wyoming Police and county sheriff’s patrol were involved in shutting down and clearing out an area around Casey’s in Wyoming to first detain and arrest suspected car thieves, and then to keep the public away from an alleged explosive device.
Highway 30 (Forest Blvd) from 264 to 266th was barricaded about 1:30 a.m. and cleared by 5 a.m. The Wyoming Trail access at Bruce’s IGA and Casey’s was also closed. Wyoming Police booked a 27-year old Sandstone man in connection with the suspected vehicle theft. The St Paul Bomb Squad took charge of retrieving what authorities were told by the theft suspects was a bomb in the trunk of the stolen car-- but turned out to be a part of a piece of ammunition that was disposed of without incident.
December 26 a backpack was surrendered to Lakes Area Police as being abandoned at a Chisago City store. To claim please contact police offices.
December 24 The North Branch Police were called to the American Legion about 10 a.m. for a burglary. A good photo of the suspect from surveillance cameras was circulated on North Branch Police Facebook and as of Tuesday this week is still being sought. The North Branch Police also had calls last week of residential burglary at a home on Homestead and one on Harder Ave., which Chief Dan Meyer said are not connected.
A vehicle hit a power pole at Quinlan Avenue and broke it off. Driver was brought in by Lakes Area Police on suspicion of DUI and alleged to possess a handgun without a permit.
December 21 a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Lofton Avenue and 320th-- close to midnight-- led to the driver being cited for driving after revocation and the passenger for trespass. Tied to this was an arrest in Forest Lake of a suspicious male party said to be in possession of a stolen vehicle.
December 20 a glass door was broken for entry into a retail shop in Lindstrom and a burglary is under investigation. A second forced entry burglary was reported about a block and a half from this location, where an AC unit was removed for entry. No details on missing items.
The preliminary report from a fatal crash December 10, in the north end of the county, was released. The incident did not immediately result in a fatality, so the information-sharing process with media was delayed, along with unavailability of the deputy writing the report and extended timeframe for state patrol coming into the investigation. The county was called to a crash at Acacia Trail (#4) and County Road 10 about 3:30 p.m. on a report that two vehicles had collided. One driver, Heidi Lee Butau, 44 of Cambridge, had reportedly missed the stop sign while southbound on Acacia, and hit a car broadside that was heading east on County Road 10, outside of Harris. A six-year-old passenger was not hurt.
The second driver, 75-year-old John Charles Ploetz died as a result of injuries.
No charges are reported yet. Sheriff investigators are talking with a witness and investigating.
