Don't tell me there is nothing to do, Relay and Karl Oskar Days are here

This week is a big one.  There are two massive events taking place. The Chisago County Relay for Life and Karl Oskar Days are both upon us.

The Chisago County Relay for Life has changed dates and locations this year. Unfortunately the expense for using the Threshing Grounds was  too costly and the Relay has moved back to a prior location at the North Branch Outlet Mall.  The Relay for Life takes place Saturday from 4 pm until 10 pm. Opening ceremony will begin at 6 pm.

For those of us who have been touched by cancer, this is an important event, no wait, that is an understatement.  It is a huge event.  It is our chance to honor those who fought so hard and lost their battle with cancer. It is our chance to honor those who are currently battling and those who have beaten cancer.

Cancer sucks.  Sorry for the harsh words, but it took my mom, my aunt, my uncles, my friend and others I have loved.  Cancer sucks, it really does.  I miss my mother every single day as do many of you miss your loved ones.  This is a time to walk, remember, smile, cry, and hug.  If you have never been to a Relay, I would highly encourage it.  It is really moving when they light the luminaries around the track and the quiet takes over as the memories flow.  Again the event begins at 4 pm and is located at the North Branch Outlet Mall.

The other main event this weekend is Karl Oskar Days.  This is the 200th year Karl Oskar Days has taken place in Lindstrom.  Ok, maybe not 200 but we have been enjoying Karl Oskar Days for decades and decades.  The funny think is it keeps getting bigger and better. This year is no exception.

Wednesday is the official kick off.  There is the Farmer’s Market at St. Bridget’s and then Bob & the Beachcombers take the stage at Harmony in the Park. There is a kiddie parade that follows Harmony.

Thursday you are invited to take a free walking tour of downtown Lindstrom that starts here at the Press at 3 pm.  Thursday is also downtown Diva Night. Women and girls can partake in specials, fun, wine tasting (not the girls) and bingo at Winehaven.

On Friday there is a craft fair filled all throughout town, with great items and wonderful food in Memorial Park.  Lindstrom Municipal Liquors’ very popular craft beer sampling is at 5 pm.  Bingo at city hall at 6:30pm. At Beach Park you will find volleyball, inflatables, a beer garden with live music and fireworks Friday at 10:15pm.

Saturday has a golf tournament, the largest 5K in Chisago County - the Lindstrom Loppet starts at 8 am. There is a car show at St. Bridget’s at 9 am and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at Trinity Lutheran church.   Saturday is parade day, stop by the beer garden behind Deutschland Meats that runs from 4-9 pm with the parade beginning at 6 pm.  The night caps off with GB Leighton playing the street dance that between the Muni and the liquor store at 8 pm.

Sunday has a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Hall that runs from 7am - noon.  At Beach Park you will find fitness classes by SCRMC along with wood pallet design classes and even a cookies and canvas event for ages 6-12.

You are invited to tour the Karl Oskar House on Saturday and Sunday at Ki Chi Saga Park.  The 2018 Karl Oskar Days ends with the ambassador coronation held at the community center, by Lions Park,  Sunday evening at 5 pm.

I forgot to mention - somewhere within city limits, Karl Oskar has lost his snuff box.  Get clues at noon every day to lead you to the snuff box.  The lucky winner will win some cold hard cash.  Please respect private property when looking.  Good luck!
