Darwin W. Berglund, age 91 of Lindstrom, Minnesota, passed away on March 20, 2018.  He was born at home in (Panola) Lindstrom, Minnesota on March 17, 1927 to parents Oscar and Hannah Berglund.  He was the fourth child.  He served in the Navy from April 15, 1944 – May 23, 1946 and January 13, 1948 – September 22, 1949.  He was Fireman First Class.  He served on the USS Burleigh and the USS Maryland.  He then enlisted in the Air Force from September 23, 1949 – December 9, 1952 and was stationed in Germany.  He was a Staff Sergeant. He was at the invasion of Okinawa – took the 71st troops to Japan.  He brought landing craft equipment, patrolled at night to protect ships.  He witnessed Kamikaze pilots coming at the ships.

Darwin had a beautiful rose garden at his home in Lindstrom where they lived for over 50 years.  He enjoyed working in the yard and woodworking.  Some of his projects included a doll cabinet, a cradle, and several varieties of Swedish stools.  He also added a porch onto his home and built storage sheds, and remodeled a bathroom and family room at his daughter Cherol’s home. Darwin and Lois retired to Lake Wales in Florida for the winter months from December 1989 – April 2015.  They enjoyed escaping from the Minnesota winters!  They had many friends at Orange Acres Ranch in Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Glendon and Kenneth; sister Marjorie Anderson; brothers-in-law Kenneth Anderson, Lowell Medin and Lyle Medin; infant sons Mark and David.

Darwin is survived by his wife Lois of 60 years; son Darrel (Marcia Straub) and daughter Cherol (Michael) Young; grandson Steven Young; sisters-in-law Linda (Roger) Lindgren, Delores Medin, Fran Medin, Dorothy Berglund and Lillian Berglund, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services was held Friday, March 23, 2018 at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, Minnesota.  Interment at Hillside Cemetery in Center City, MN.  Memorials preferred to Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, PO Box 175, Center City, MN  55012 or Honor Flight Twin Cities, Attn: Jerry and Jana Kyser, 2674 Mackubin St., Roseville, MN  55113.  Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be left online at www.grandstrandfh.com
