Wildcat baseball team starts slow in first three games of the season

Foley 10, Chisago Lakes 4
In the Wildcat baseball team’s season opener, the Foley Falcons scored seven runs in the second inning as they soared to a 10-4 win over the Wildcats.  The Falcons led 10-0 before Mitch Barrett’s two-run double in the fifth inning broke up the shutout.  The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth on run-scoring groundouts by Henry Trost and Joe Abrahamson.  Abrahamson had two of the Wildcats’ five hits.  The game was played at Foley on Tuesday, April 24.

Rogers 10, Chisago Lakes 7
The Wildcats led 4-0 after the top of the third inning against the Rogers Royals, but the Royals scored three runs in the third and six in the fourth on their way to a 10-7 win over the Wildcats.  The game was played at Rogers on Thursday, April 26.

In the top of the first, Mitch Barrett singled with one out to drive in Joey Ferris with the first run of the game.  Courtesy runner Trevor Johnson later scored on a groundout by David Kimlinger to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.  In the second, Henry Trost singled to right to drive in Connor Wilke.  And Kimlinger’s double in the third scored Johnson to increase the Wildcat lead to 4-0.

But the Royals came roaring back to take a 9-4 lead after four innings.  Trailing 10-4 entering the top of the sixth, the Wildcats made it interesting.  Joe Abrahamson doubled to drive in two runs and later scored on a passed ball.  But with two outs, Joey Ferris lined to short to end the Wildcats’ rally.
Ferris, Barrett and Wilke had two hits apiece for the Wildcats, and Kimlinger. Ferris and Wilke each doubled.

Duluth Denfeld 7, Chisago Lakes 0
The Wildcats and Duluth Denfeld Hunters each had five hits in their game last Friday, April 27.  But the difference in the game was walks.  Hunter pitchers walked just one Wildcat batter, while the Wildcats walked 13 Denfeld batters.  The Wildcats only got one player as far as third base in the game, while the Hunters had a constant parade of baserunners, some of whom were bound to score.  Denfeld slowly built a lead, scoring single runs in three of the first four innings to take a 3-0 lead.  They added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Baseball Banter
The Wildcats will face the St. Francis Fighting Saints in a doubleheader this afternoon at Pat Collins Field at Chisago Lakes High School starting at 4 p.m.  The Big Lake Hornets will buzz into Lindstrom tomorrow for a night game starting at 7 p.m.  And on Monday, the Wildcats will head west on Highway 8 to take on the Forest Lake Rangers at Schumacher Field in Forest Lake.  The game will start at 4 p.m.
