Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and two sisters.
She is survived by her son LeRoy “Lee” (Louisa) Brand of Chisago City; daughter Carol (Allen) Kratz of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Kris (Kristy) Kratz, Casey (David) Stauffer, Kirby (Nicholas) Williamson, Travis (Angela) Brand and Colin (Kami) Brand; 15 great-grandchildren; and also many nieces and nephews.
Doris was born July 16, 1915, in Dwight Township, rural Wahpeton, N.D. She was the third daughter of William and Marie (Tew) Coppin. Doris attended rural Richland County Elementary School, Wahpeton High School, and Moorhead State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in rural Wilkin County, MN schools at age 19. She continued her education by attending night classes and summer school, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Cloud State University. During WWII, Doris enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES. While she was in service she was a Link trainer instructor, and also taught ship and plane recognition in the Naval flight program. In 1947, Doris married John Brand of Wahpeton. The couple moved to the Chisago City area in 1949. Doris continued her teaching career in this area, serving at Taylors Falls and Chisago City before consolidation, and finishing her career in the Forest Lake district in 1975. Doris was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Lindstrom. In retirement she enjoyed many volunteer activities, including tutoring, volunteering at Parmly, driving for Meals on Wheels, transporting friends to doctor and dentist appointments, and sewing clothing and stuffed toys for family and friends. Her hobbies included quilting and making teddy bears.
Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 10, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in Lindstrom. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2018, at Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or the Children’s Home Society ofMinnesota, 1605 Eustis Street, St Paul, MN 55108.
