David Hughes

David Allen Hughes, loving husband, father and grandfather, age 76 of Chisago City, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 19, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.  David was married to Kathy Swenson on May 29, 2004, in St. Louis Park.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Isabelle Hughes; one brother, Bud and four sisters, Jean, Marvel, Shirley, and Darlene.  He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hughes; two sons, Jesse of St. Croix Falls and Joe of North Branch; two step-sons, Derek (Rachel) Hanson of Chisago City and Dustin (Heidi) Hanson of River Falls, WI; three grandchildren, Deven, Kaya, and Jacob Hanson; brothers, Jim and Dick (Jean), all of White Bear Lake; sisters, Audrey of Elk River and Mae (Norm) Haupt of Lindstrom; sister-in-law, LaVaughn Hughes of Clearwater, FL; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

David served in the U.S. Army for six years doing three tours in Vietnam where he was an airplane mechanic.  His two main careers were welding at American Hoist & Derrick until they relocated to North Carolina, and then an over the road truck driver. As a truck driver he traveled to 46 different states as well as Canada.  In later years he became a local driver within the metro.

David was a very committed Christian.  He was a member of Seed of Abraham Messianic congregation in St. Louis Park for many years.  He also served as an elder there for over six years.  He had attended Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City for the past year and a half.

David was an avid kayaker whose favorite place to kayak was Lake Superior, often putting in at the Grand Marais harbor or Chicago Bay in Hovland.  He enjoyed every aspect of the North Shore, whether it be hiking and exploring the woods and shoreline around Grand Marais or snowshoeing in the Superior National Forest  He was always on the lookout for a moose!  Grand Marais was his favorite destination no matter the season or weather.  He enjoyed sipping Java Moose coffee and sitting on the beach, making frequent visits to the Lake Superior Trading Post (usually his first stop when arriving in town), and staying at his favorite little cabin on the Croftville Road.  David also loved visiting his two brothers-in-law in San Francisco, enjoying walks along the ocean and time with family.

A Celebration of David’s Life will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 5, at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Grandstrand Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
