Both Chisago Lakes alpine ski teams ran into the buzzsaw that is this year’s Stillwater squad.

The Ponies swept both the boys and girls competitions by pretty wide margins, but a few individual Chisago Lakes’ skiers did manage to make the state tournament and should have some nice showings in this week’s meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Boys
As a team, the boys finished in fifth place after they were hoping for a shot a state meet berth.

Jamie Mower was the top finisher for the ‘Cats, coming in 11th place on both runs, and that got him a ninth place finish overall and earned him an individual state meet entrance.

Mike Frischmon, Will Hennen and Jack LeTourneau also put up points for the boys, with Frischmon coming in 27th place, Hennen in 37th and LeTourneau in 38th.

The top 10 finish was an impressive collection of runs for Mower, who is only a junior. He will be making his state meet debut.

The boys compiled 397 points on the day to finish in fifth place overall. Stillwater, Duluth East, Forest Lake and Blaine comprised the top five, with Stillwater scoring 478 points. All four of their skiers finished in the top 11 overall.

The ‘Cats had a couple of unfortunate falls that cost them a shot at a higher spot. August Brown was in eighth place after his first run, but he had a heartbreaking end to his state meet bid when a ski came off on the steeps of the Helsinki run.

Zach Hennen also had a good first run, sitting in 28th place and third among Wildcats after the first run, but The Helsinki got him too, as he took a spill that cost nearly 30 seconds, plummeting him from 28th to 97th overall.

Girls
On the girls’ side, the Wildcats edged out Hermantown and Duluth East to finish in the top three with a strong performance.

They were led by state meet entrants Sophie Janzig and Megan Cartier. Janzig came in ninth place overall after a seventh place finish on the Innsbruck Course and a ninth place finish on Helsinki.

Megan Cartier finished just a second and a half behind her,  in 10th place overall. She had a 16th place finish on Innsbruck and a 10th place finish on The Helsinki that ate so many skiers on the day.

Both of the girls will be making their second straight trip to the state tournament, as last year the girls went as a team from the section.

Janzig didn’t finish last year after a fall and Cartier came in 52nd place and will be looking to improve on that time.

Kaylee Peterson and Annah Mellum rounded out CL’s scoring for sections with a 39th and 64th place finish. Megan Adams, who is typically one of CL’s top skiers, took a spill on Helsinki, and dropped from 34th to 87th.

Stillwater won the meet with 457 points and Cook County finished in second with 418 points. CL totaled 390 points on the day,  besting Hermantown’s 386 and Duluth East’s 385.
