North Branch Sunrise Elementary School takes the know where your food comes from movement to heart, every October, with students doing way more than just eating local produce at lunchtime and learning about farms in class.

The lessons are called Farm 2 School.

Last week the kids enjoyed animals (goats, rabbit, geese, etc) that a local rescue run by Sandra Holmgren provided. For show-and-tell Harley Meyer delivers his tractor to the schoolyard and Olson Power & Equipment brings one of their pieces of machinery.  Students wear country gear like overalls braids and straw hats.  There is a display of just-picked vegetables so kids can see what certain foods look like before they end up in a dish.

Nutrition is important to the food service crew at North Branch, who make choices of vegetables and fruit a regular lunch item.  Pam Connelly, with food service says, “We are really trying hard to give our children healthy meals at school and a learning opportunity.”
