Tom was born on October 16, 1959, in St. Paul, MN to Russell and RuthAnn Barnes. He spent his early childhood there and moved with the family to Shafer, MN, where he graduated from Taylors Falls Public School in 1978.
He worked in St. Paul with his father at Century Circuits, and then owned and operated Pioneer Sausage, on Rice Street. He later attended St. Paul College and earned his degree in automated manufacturing which led to his career in precision design and engineering of medical devices. He traveled to customers all over the US and in Ireland.
In his first marriage Tom was blessed with two daughters, Nicole and Bridget.
In 1997, he married the love of his life, Sally (Anderson) Barnes, at their childhood church and celebrated the evening on their beloved Saint Croix River, aboard the Taylors Falls Princess paddleboat with family and friends.
After remodeling several homes Tom and Sally retired to Little Green Lake in Chisago City. He was a talented, hard working carpenter and excelled at electrical work/electronics. He loved the water and was an avid fisherman. Deer hunting was also a passion of his, and he treasured the memories of doing so with his dad. Tom was an accomplished marksman. He loved animals and was a well respected sportsman. Tom was a highly intelligent, gifted man whose favorite college subject was quantum physics. He had a quick wit and a great sense of humor. Tom and Sally enjoyed traveling to many wonderful destinations in our country and abroad. He cared for and loved people deeply.
Survived by his beloved wife Sally; daughters Nicole (Neb) Malic and Bridget (Eric) Svare; parents Russell and RuthAnn Barnes; sisters Cindy (Scott) Hanacek, Melissa (Pat) Durand, and Amy (Scott) Oestriech, and their families.
Preceeded in death by his infant son Joel and grandparents.
Private family services were held Monday, August 3, at Kahbakong Cemetery in Taylors Falls, MN.
Arrangements under the care and direction of Grandstrand Funeral Home.
