Council sees Lindstrom Fire Hall design

Council sees Lindstrom Fire Hall design

The first drawings and cost estimates for Lindstrom’s new fire hall were reviewed last week by the city council. Early estimates are that the seven bay fire hall can be built for between $5,272,960 and $4,585,183.

The responsibility for completing the project’s final designs and the bid package  was given to Progressive Architects, out of White Bear Lake, on their quote of $456,000.  (Sealed bids are not required for “professional services.”)

The city land where the old cement tip-up wall manufacturing plant used to sit, will house the new fire hall.  Bonds have been sold to fund the project (Story July 23 including the city acquiring  Lakeview Motel.)

In other matters, council approved the park board adding two members and going to nine.  The group is quite active and often finds more people are interested in being involved than there are seats on the park board to accommodate them.  City code just requires the city council to appoint members, it has no size restrictions.

City Administrator John Olinger said there were 93 applications for a city hall job posting. Miranda Olson was recommended for filling the office assistant/communications vacancy, and council agreed 5-0.

The plat for a 32-lot housing development at the golf course was approved.

The layout exceeds some city maximum standards, ie: it required a variance on open space, which is 55 percent in ordinance but will be 27 percent in this project.  The Ag/Open zoning was changed to R2-PUD, with variances from some planned unit development standards.

The homes will be on the north edge of the golf course property, to the west of the bar & grill--directly across from Chisago Lakes High School ballfields.  The neighborhood is under a homeowner association and is meant to attract owners who want to interface with golfing activity.
Construction should start in spring 2021.

The Olinda Trail apartment project did not come before council last week.  Planning officials said it is anticipated for the September City Council agenda.

Small business person?
The covid business reliefprogram is moving ahead.  Businesses that were forced to shutdown in relation to virus concerns and need funds to pay covid-related unanticipated expenses, are the target of the first phase of grants to be awarded.  The city council agreed to contribute some of the city covid CARES Act monies to the county’s relief program.

The next phase will be businesses that have been negatively impacted,  but were allowed to remain open.  These funds will be open to apply for beginning Aug 31.

The county also has a pool of money for non-commercial/non profit  enterprises. (See County Board story elsewhere in this paper.)
