Both alpine ski teams wrap up NWSC championships
Both the boys and girls teams finished their season-long sweep of the Northwest Suburban Conference races with wins at Trollhaugen on Thursday, January 30.
Girls
The Wildcats crushed Centennial in the final race of the NWSC schedule, winning by almost 100 points over the second place Cougars.
Chisago Lakes was led by Sophie Janzig, who finished in second place overall after great runs on both the red and blue course.
After that, the ‘Cats were wildly consistent in their results. Megan Cartier came in 11th place, Megan Adams in 14th place, Kaylee Peterson in 16th place, Annah Mellum in 19th place, Hailey Lundgren in 20th place and Maren Dahl in 23rd place.
Every girl on the team stuck their run, with no falls or stumbles throughout the course. With seven racers scoring points, depth is really tested, and the ‘Cats passed with flying colors.
Janzig’s final tallies gave her third place overall in the individual conference race. She checked in behind Cierra Karels of Cambridge-Isanti, who finished first in every meet this year for the Bluejackets, and Stella Gronski of Anoka, who finished just one point ahead of Janzig.
The girls had five more All-NWSC skiers in Cartier, Adams, Peterson, Mellum and Maren Dahl.
Boys
The boys had to fend off a tough charge from Blaine to finish their perfect season, but after the Bengals, nobody was close to their stratosphere.
The ‘Cats had four of the top five finishers in the race. Augie Brown won the event by getting first place on both the blue and red runs. Jamie Mower finished just slightly behind Brown on both runs and finished in second overall. Zach Hennen wasn’t far behind in third place and Jack LeTourneau came in fifth place.
Will Hennen came in 12th place for CL, Gavin Bodin finished in 18th place and Andrew Johnsen rounded out CL’s varsity scoring with a 33rd place.
The high finishes were key when Mike Frischmon, who finished seventh on the blue run, took a spill on the red run and finished in 77th overall. The domination at the top of the leaderboard held off the Bengals, who put six of their seven scoring skiers in the top 20.
Brown finished his individual clean sweep of the NWSC, winning every race, which led him to the conference championship for the second straight year.
Zach Hennen finished in second place overall in the conference and after those two, the ‘Cats added three more competitors to the All-NWSC team, including Will Hennen, Frischmon andBodin. “We are lucky to have such great kids on our Chisago Lakes alpine teams,” Assistant Coach Su Leslie said. “We’ve had some good days of training at Giants Ridge and are hoping for a successful section race!”
