Robert was born December 9, 1945 to Arthur and Alice (Torkleson) Swanson in Grantsburg, WI. He was a healthy and happy child, with an older brother, Roger and a younger brother, Donald. Robert went to school at Lansdale until 8th grade when the one room school was closed. He then attended high school in Luck, graduating in 1964. He then went to UW-River Falls for two years. While there, he met the love of his life, Sharon Johnson. They were married in 1967. Robert then attended WITC-Rice Lake for 2 years and enlisted in the Navy in 1968.
Robert and Sharon had four children born to them, Robert Jr, Rachel, Ross, and Rebekah. They also fostered many children, and adopted one of their foster children, Paul.
Throughout his Navy career, Robert and his family were stationed in Waihawi, Hawaii, Winter Harbor, Maine, and Guam. Eventually the family returned to Wisconsin and settled in a house they built in Somerset, where they remained, except for 12 years caring for Sharon's father in Palmdale, MN. Robert remained in the Navy Reserves until his retirement in 1992.
Robert was active in Christ Lutheran Church in Somerset. He was Quarter Master for the Chisago County VFW. He spent many years mowing the lawn and manning the Johnson Building at the Almelund Threshing Show, where he also enjoyed showing his 1963 Ford Jubilee. He also spent many years running the clock for many of the Somerset High School athletic events.
He is survived by his loving wife Sharon, sons Robert Jr and Ross (Josie); daughters Rachel (Ernest) Besaw and Rebekah (fiance Ben Sorenson) Meuers, granddaughters Angelina, Alexis, and Allison; brothers Roger and Don (Deb); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
