Wyoming Police were called to a scene of an agitated man who was not cooperating with law enforcement demands. Only a short time ago— there might be a potentially injurious takedown or an elongated negotiating period— but this time the patrol officer used a BolaWrap device and law enforcement took control of the suspect quickly.

Wyoming City Police Chief Paul Hoppe shared with the city council recently that the department recently successfully deployed this new less lethal invention.  According to its website, BolaWrap is a de-escalation device. It can subdue an uncooperative suspect from 10 to 25 feet away by encircling a suspect with a strong cord that wraps around the body.

BolaWrap consists of a hand held unit that discharges an eight foot long Kevlar strength  cord.  A deploying officer can aim it at arm level or around the legs.  Think rodeo and Spiderman’s web shooters.

There is a green line laser for aiming and the activation button sets off a .380 blank that makes a noise that gets offenders’ attention.

The incident where the Wyoming officer utilized the BolaWrap is one of the specific incidents the product literature recommends it be used for.
