Robert Thompson

Robert (Bob) Thompson July 13, 1934 - December 1, 2022.

Robert (Bob) Thompson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed into eternal life at the age of 88, on December 1, 2022.

Born into a farming family in Woodbine, Iowa in 1934; he started his education in a one-room schoolhouse and transitioned to Woodbine High School when his family moved into town.  He graduated from Woodbine High in 1952, and more importantly, met the love of his life Mary Ann Anderson there. After he completed his engineering degree in 1956 at Iowa State University the couple married and raised a family of four children. He spent 34 years at 3M as an industrial engineer, working in Bedford Park, Illinois, St. Paul, Minnesota and Brookings, South Dakota.

From an early age, he was an avid sports enthusiast – player and fan. In high school, he lettered in four sports; in college, he began his lifetime love of golf. He continued playing intramural basketball, tennis, and  horseshoes through his 40s and in recent years (in his young 80’s) added pickleball to the roster.

Bob served on the Chisago Lakes Golf Course Board, played in the men's league and golfed daily.
He had a beautiful tenor voice and was a member of the Iowa State Singers and later sang in many church choirs. His family has fond memories of watching musicals, singing together while traveling, and hearing his voice in song in all manner of places.

He was a parish member at St. Bridget’s of Sweden Catholic Church in Lindstrom. He enjoyed life, occasionally playing bridge, and loved to spend time with family.
Bob is survived by his wife Mary, three daughters Julia (Ringhofer,) Stephanie (Pontius,) Colleen (Parquette,); son Robert Thompson and sister Marilyn Woodruff. Preceded in death by his parents Cliff and Marge Thompson, Woodbine, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Lindstrom with visitation one hour prior to Mass at church.  Arrangements by Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.grandstrandfh.com
