A K9-trained dog serving with the sheriff’s office since last spring, was lost in a house fire Monday this week. Now, a community response is underway to help his handler/deputy and the deputy’s family to recover.
“Kyro” and Deputy Nate Fisher started training soon after Kyro arrived in February 2022. They came together as a night team and started taking K9 calls approximately last June.
Kyro, a few days shy of his second birthday, became part of the Fisher family and was in the house with two family dogs when firefighters were dispatched to the single family home, in Nessel Township Dec 19, Monday afternoon. Those responding found that the fire had taken hold, and the Sheriff’s Office reported on Twitter that K9 Kyro and the family’s dogs perished. No family members were home at the time.
Sheriff’s Captain Derek Anklan said the sheriff’s three K9 units, Kyro, Stryker and Ghost—who often visited nursing homes, educational settings and community celebrations —connected with countless civilians. The outpouring of support following the announcing of the fire, has been astonishing, he added.
Sgt. Jim Mott commented that those involved in working with Deputy Fisher and Kyro have realized that “not only are we (law enforcement) here for the community but the community is here for us.”
There are a number of ways to support the family: Donations of household items, and/or clothing are being accepted at Perrault Chiropractic & Acupuncture in North Branch, 6361 Mainstreet, or at Deutschland Meats, Lindstrom, 12825 Lake Blvd and at All Ways Automotive, 29173 Karmel (at Hwy. 8) Chisago City.
Also drop off retail gift and gas cards (these are preferred) and donation checks, or send by mail to the Chisago County Sheriff Foundation, at P.O. Box 303 Center City, MN 55012. Capt. Anklan recounted on Tuesday this week talking to See FIRE/4.
