Harriet Ryberg


Harriet Rosemary (Johnson) Ryberg passed away December 16, 2022. A day short of her 94th birthday.

Harriet was the fourth child of Harry and Myrtle (Carlson) Johnson born at home on December 17, 1928. Harriet arrived before the mid-wife got there. Harriet was baptized and confirmed at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church; the foundation of her faith life. She started at Chelberg Country School, then Kost Country School before going to North Branch High School, Class of 1946.

While working in North Branch at the Chisago County Extension Office she met Marvin Ryberg. They were married at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church on December 24, 1950. On January 19, 1952 while returning from serving his country in Japan, Marvin died in a plane crash. In 1959 Harriet moved to Minneapolis to work for Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). She worked for Rev. Herbert Chilstrom the 1st Bishop of the ELCA. She worked in various roles in the church including Augsberg Fortress Press until retirement in 1990. In 1962, Harriet and three friends went on a 3-month European adventure. Harriet built a cabin on Horseshoe Lake near Harris MN which became a gathering place for the entire family (Remember: “don’t go past the lily pads!”)

On retirement Harriet moved to Lindstrom. Harriet kept busy in retirement by Brailling for State Services for the Blind, as a financial secretary for Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, volunteering at Chisago Lakes Achievement Center and other organizations benefiting her community. Harriet enjoyed great friendships with her Waters Edge con family. Harriet returned to live in North Branch residing at Ecumen in 2020 until her passing.

Harriet relied on faith her entire life. Harriet enjoyed hot coffee, ice cream, kittens, biking, birding, hiking, roller skating, walking around Lindstrom and storytelling. Harriet appreciated good friends and valued helping others.

Harriet is preceded in death by her husband Marvin, parents Harry and Myrtle; siblings Gertrude (Melvin) Lindo, Burnette (Irvin) Wikelius, and Ellis (Verona) Johnson. Her Ryberg family parents John and Edna; siblings; Berthol (Vi), Marian, Wally, and Carol, as well as, nieces and nephews; Kathy Wikelius, Jan (Dave) Rambow, Cheryl Foley, David Johnson and Dale Abear and numerous cousins and friends.

Harriet is survived by in-laws Roger Ryberg and Anita Ryberg; nieces and nephews Marvin (Kathy) Lindo, Marlene Abear, LuAnne (Charlie) Cedergren, Lowell (Kathy) Lindo, Charlie (Ann) Wikelius, Norman (Raj) Wikelius, Karen (Steve) Graves, Larry (Sandy) Wikelius, Gary (Roseanne) Johnson, David Foley, Verle Johnson, Jim (Sara) Ryberg, Scott (Ann) Ryberg, Eric (Jennifer) Ryberg; cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service were Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Final resting place was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Harris MN.
Memorial preferred to ELCA World Hunger Appeal or Chisago Lake Lutheran Church.
