Betty Martin



Betty Martin, age 88, of Chisago City, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2023, in Detroit Lakes in the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and the wonderful staff of the Ecumen Cottage. 

Preceded in death by first husband, Ronald Armstrong and foster son, Lyle Boucher. Survived by husband, Jack Martin; children, Ron (Linda) Armstrong, Patti (Craig) Peltier, Becky (Scott) Goodhart, Robert (Robin) Armstrong; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. 

Betty was born February 11, 1935, at General Hospital, Minneapolis, MN, the only child of Leo and Mildred Hanson. She spent most of her school years in New Brighton, MN. 

She married Ron Armstrong on December 27, 1952. They moved several times for Ron’s job and the first two of four children were born in Minneapolis. The couple put down permanent roots in Fargo, ND. They became foster parents and the last two of their children were born in Fargo. 

Ron died in a car accident in 1969. Following that, Betty moved her family to Chisago City, MN. Life revolved around family and raising animals. 

Betty met and married Jack Martin on June 25, 1973. Betty worked with Jack as tandem truck drivers for many years. Then she drove a school bus for 20 years for the Chisago Lakes School District. 

Animals were always Betty’s passion, horses especially. She rode many miles on horseback across Minnesota raising money for Camp Courage and Camp New Hope. She enjoyed life at the farm, her cats and old time music, especially Roy Rogers.

She deeply loved her family, and they deeply loved her. She became a calm rock that could always be depended on to listen without judgment.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at Roberts Family Funeral Home, 555 Centennial Drive SW, Forest Lake, MN 55025 Interment will be on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at 1 p.m. at East Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Amery, WI.
