Sharon Self

Beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Sharon Jean (Swanson) Self, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.  Her three children were by her side.

Sharon was born October 4, 1942, on the family farm in North Branch. She met Edgar (Ed) Earl Self II, the love of her life, in Santa Barbara, CA.  They were married June 20, 1965, in North Branch Trinity Lutheran Church.  They spent over 50 wonderful years in Yorktown.  Ed passed away February 15, 2018.

Sharon worked 30 years serving as an Executive Assistant and Officer at the former Industrial Trust and Savings Bank. In retirement, Ed and Sharon enjoyed spending their winters in Florida for more than 15 years. Her positivity, quick wit, and humor made her many friends. Sharon’s love of sewing and crafting made her booth at The Yorktown Farmers Market a favorite. She was a member of the Yorktown Historical Alliance, North Branch Alumni Association, and Yorktown United Methodist Church, where she served on the Board of Trustees and the Endowment Committee.

Family and friends were very important to Sharon. She celebrated her 80th birthday in 2022 with family in Minnesota and attended her 62nd high school class reunion. In addition to sewing, puzzles and gift giving, Sharon’s greatest joy was being a grandmother.

She was one of six children. Her parents, Clifford A.O. Swanson and Irene Elsie Olson Swanson, are deceased. Survivors include her brother Douglas Clifford Swanson (Mary), and sister Phyllis Mead (Scott). Other sisters, all deceased, were Dorothy Benson (Dick), Arlene Palmquist (LeRoy, deceased), and Beverly Marden (John, deceased).

Her children are Andrew (Andy) Self, Cathy M. Curtis (husband, Jason), and Heidi M. Vifquain (husband, Scott). Seven beloved grandchildren also survive: Nicholas Self, Kyle Self, Audrey Tuttle, Jonas Tuttle, Sam Vifquain, Anna Vifquain, and Ella Vifquain. She also leaves behind many wonderful nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Sharon at Meeks Mortuary, Isanogel Rd, Muncie on Saturday, October 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., with services to follow.

Donations may be made in Sharon’s memory to the Yorktown Farmers Marketplace or REACH Yorktown.

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel will handle arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at  www. meeksmortuary.com.
