Last week, the Wildcat girls’ hockey team played in the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic tournament at Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington, winning their first two games and losing the third game.
The tournament was not bracket-style or round-robin-style, just a chance to play some teams that are not generally on the Wildcats’’ schedule.
Chisago Lakes 5, New Prague 1
Allyson Vogelsang had a pure hat trick, scoring the last three goals of the game, to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 win over the New Prague Trojans in the opening game of the tournament on Wednesday, December 28.
New Prague took a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. But the Wildcats came back with two goals less than a minute apart midway through the period to go up 2-1.
Laine DeVries scored at 6:05 of the period, assisted by Lexi Smothers, to tie the game at 1-1. At 6:55, Lauren Schmidt scored the go-ahead goal, with the assist going to Ella Perreault.
Vogelsang scored the only goal of the second period with just over a minute remaining to make it 3-1. Schmidt got the assist. Schmidt and Perreault scored on Vogelsang’s second goal, at 7:12 of the third period. And Vogelsang scored a power play goal two-and-a-half minutes later, assisted by Perreault and Joee Westland, to make the final score 5-1 and complete her hat trick.
The Wildcats outshot the Trojans 40-28 for the game, and Wildcat goalie Breanna Ritter stopped 27 of the 28 shots she faced to pick up the win.
Chisago Lakes 4, Eastview 2
After spotting the Eastview Lightning a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Wildcats scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Lightning 4-2 on Thursday, December 29. Brooke Klemz scored an unassisted goal at 14:37 of the first period to cut the Eastview lead to 2-1. Tianna Ritter scored at 15:38 of the second period, assisted by Lexi Smothers and Klemz, to tie the game at 2-2. Ella Perreault scored the Wildcats’ second unassisted goal of the game at 2:41 of the third period for a 3-2 lead. And Laine DeVries added an insurance goal with seven minutes to go in the game, assisted by Klemz and Smothers, to make the final 4-2. After being outshot 12-8 in the first period, the Wildcats came to life and outshot the Lightning 25-13 over the last two periods. Wildcat goalie Breanna Ritter stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced to earn the win.
Owatonna 7, Chisago Lakes 0
Ezra Oien scored a hat trick to lead the Owatonna Huskies to a 7-0 shutout win over the Wildcats in the final game of the tournament on Friday, December 30. The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 43-15 for the game, dominating from start to finish.
Hockey Hullaballoo
The Wildcats (7-5-0) will take on Delano/Rockford this afternoon at Delano Area Sports Arena at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, they will head north to Virginia to take on the Rock Ridge Wolverines at Iron Trail Motors Event Center at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday January 10, the Wildcats will play their second home game of the season, hosting the Princeton Tigers at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena.
