Schmitz Holiday Classic
Last week, the Wildcat girls’ hockey team played in the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic tournament at Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington, winning their first two games and losing the third game.
The tournament was not bracket-style or round-robin-style, just a chance to play some teams that are not generally on the Wildcats’’ schedule.

Chisago Lakes 5, New Prague 1
Allyson Vogelsang had a pure hat trick, scoring the last three goals of the game, to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 win over the New Prague Trojans in the opening game of the tournament on Wednesday, December 28.

New Prague took a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game.  But the Wildcats came back with two goals less than a minute apart midway through the period to go up 2-1.

Laine DeVries scored at 6:05 of the period, assisted by Lexi Smothers, to tie the game at 1-1.  At 6:55, Lauren Schmidt scored the go-ahead goal, with the assist going to Ella Perreault.

Vogelsang scored the only goal of the second period with just over a minute remaining to make it 3-1.  Schmidt got the assist.  Schmidt and Perreault scored on Vogelsang’s second goal, at 7:12 of the third period.  And Vogelsang scored a power play goal two-and-a-half minutes later, assisted by Perreault and Joee Westland, to make the final score 5-1 and complete her hat trick.

The Wildcats outshot the Trojans 40-28 for the game, and Wildcat goalie Breanna Ritter stopped 27 of the 28 shots she faced to pick up the win.

Chisago Lakes 4, Eastview 2
After spotting the Eastview Lightning a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Wildcats scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Lightning 4-2 on Thursday, December 29.  Brooke Klemz scored an unassisted goal at 14:37 of the first period to cut the Eastview lead to 2-1.  Tianna Ritter scored at 15:38 of the second period, assisted by Lexi Smothers and Klemz, to tie the game at 2-2.  Ella Perreault scored the Wildcats’ second unassisted goal of the game at 2:41 of the third period for a 3-2 lead.  And Laine DeVries added an insurance goal with seven minutes to go in the game, assisted by Klemz and Smothers, to make the final 4-2.  After being outshot 12-8 in the first period, the Wildcats came to life and outshot the Lightning 25-13 over the last two periods.  Wildcat goalie Breanna Ritter stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced to earn the win.
