Shafer Council briefs...

Shafer City Council met May 16 for a regular meeting. Council member Nick Brehm was absent.

The meeting began with a moment of silence and prayer for the family of city finance director Drew Hill who recently passed away.  The city of Lindstrom has agreed to allow assistant finance director Krista Lord to sub for up to 10 hours a week.

The council then passed a resolution accepting Shafer Days donations from Ole’s Crossroads for $250 and from Shafer Contracting for $250 and $300 from MSA who the city uses for engineering.

The council then accepted an application for a vacant opening on the planning commission from Nancy Grossmann.

City clerk Valerie Fox then told the council she would like permission to sign the city up for Xpress Bill Pay for credit card processing. Fox told the council the new city website will be complete in 4-6 weeks and she would like to have the designers incorporate Xpress Bill Pay onto the site for residents to easily pay their water bills. The council unanimously passed the request.  Cost of the bill pay is $35 a month with a $500 set-up fee.

In the engineer’s report, city engineer Lucas Jones told council he has submitted an application to the Minnesota Department of Health for the Drinking Water Revolving Fund.  The state will post priority cities and towns around mid-July.

Jones said the punch list for the water tower project is being wrapped up with some exterior touch up remaining.  Jones also said he has received calls from sub-contractors alleging non-payment from Osseo Construction which ran the water tower project as a general contractor.

In the public works report, maintenance supervisor Dan Cooper told the council a concrete corner of a slab at the water tower was damaged during construction.  Cooper told the council there are other concrete jobs the city will be constructing this summer and he would like to group the repair of the slab when those jobs are done.  The city agreed and once a price for the repair is given the city will deduct that amount from the final payout for the project.

Cooper told the council his cold asphalt mix is insufficient for patching.  He asked the council for permission to purchase more for $1,200.00.  The council voted in favor of the purchase.

Lastly, city clerk Fox told the council there were 26 properties scheduled for water shut-off.

Council adjourned at 7:33 pm.
