Wildcats move to 11-0 before finally falling to St. Michael-Albertville
Chisago Lakes 18, Sartell 6
Despite a slow start, the Chisago Lakes boys lacrosse team eventually turned their offense up a notch and ran away from the Sabres of Sartell on Thursday, May 18.
“We saw that Sartell had a 6-3 record coming into our game and had a couple of really good games against decent teams,” Head Coach Mark Nordby said. “We've learned from past years that we don't take any teams lightly.”
Senior Colin Meyers opened up the scoring well into the first quarter with an easy doorstep dunk to the left of the net off a feed from Senior Cullen Dorcas.
“We haven't seen a zone defense too many times this season so there's an adjustment to how we have to run our offense,” Nordby explained. “The guys figured it out and were able to break the defense down and get the scoring going, especially in the second half. Cullen had a great feed to Colin to get our offense moving.”
A few minutes later, Meyers passed to a cutting Owen Fitzgerald, who dodged through two defensemen to put the ball in the net.
The Wildcats put up three more goals but were matched by Sartell in the second quarter to go into halftime up 5-3. “We were struggling with unforced turnovers. The guys were losing the ball and just being a bit careless,” Nordby said. “Coach Cory Reedy discussed some good takeaways from the first half and how to break the zone even more. We also talked about valuing the ball more and really cleaning up our passing and catching.”
Whatever adjustments were made, the Wildcats went off, firing 11 more goals in the second half and allowed just three. “We had some of our best passing of the season. The guys were so connected and passing and catching with such accuracy,” Nordby said with wonder. “It was a great second half and nice to see them really elevate their game.”
Chisago Lakes 19, Rocori 0
It didn’t take long to understand the Wildcats were going to run away pretty quickly in their tangle with an overmatched Rocori Spartans team on Friday, May 19.
They traveled to Cold Spring for a Friday night matchup at Rocori High School's beautiful football stadium with the Spartans. and the ‘Cats had little trouble finding the net and keeping Rocori out of theirs.
Kadin Passeretti had five goals and four assists to lead CL, and Mason Mehsikomer added three goals. Own Fitzgerald had two goals of his own and Ben Kerkow added a goal and three assists.
Chisago had scoring from multiple other players including first time goals from senior defenseman Logan West and long stick middie freshman Austin Slettom. “It was a fun game in that we were able to play a lot of guys and we moved some of them around at the end.”
The Wildcats end their regular season this week. They hosted maybe their toughest opponent of the year, St. Michael-Albertville and lost, 13-9, Tuesday, May 23, and close out the schedule with a home game against Forest Lake today, Thursday, May 25.
