Ellie Undem is returning to Minneapolis for another crack at the state tournament, but this time she’s hoping for a trip to the finals in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle.
At the Section 5A meet in Becker, Undem broke her own school record in the 50 free that she had originally broken earlier this year by swimming a 23.92 in the shortest sprint event in swimming. In the 100 free, she swam a 53.18 also a new school record that she had already held.
Both of those times were more than enough to qualify her for the state meet this weekend in Minneapolis at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Her main competition for a state title was actually in the section with her, as Adalynn Biegler, a freshman from Monticello, is top seed in both events heading into the state tournament, and was also swimming in Section 5A.
Undem is fifth seed in the 100 freestyle, and the second seed in the 50 free behind Biegler, but with the distances being so short, it leaves open the possibility for anything, including a potential state title chance for the senior.
“Ellie has been swimming great this year, and we are so excited for her to be down at the state tournament again,” Head Coach Amanda Husfeldt said.
