Murder charge filed in domestic shooting
A woman who worked for several years as a nurse and provided healthcare to inmates in Isanti County’s correctional facility was the victim of a domestic shooting October 6 in Fish Lake Township. Isanti County Sheriff Wayne Seiberlich released a statement on the tragedy, and expressed sorrow on the loss of Sarah Jane Carda. He stressed using the domestic hotline number for anybody who is experiencing fear of bodily harm in their own home, 1-800-799-7233.
Sarah Carda was apparently fatally shot by husband Mike Larry Carda, 39, at their residence, south of Fish Lake County Park, sometime around mid-day last Friday. The medical examiner has yet to release the final report.
A Chisago County deputy arriving first on scene was attempting to gain entrance or at least make verbal contact —following up on a call that a loud dispute could be heard. He was advised by Sarah through a window the perpetrator was armed.
The person who called 9-1-1 to report the disturbance was a relative of Sarah’s.
The criminal complaint states that there was a domestic abuse-no contact order in effect between the Cardas. The responding agencies were also alerted to the fact the address is known for a large number of firearms kept in the home.
The complaint goes on to report, the responding deputy heard gunshots and was nearly struck himself when three rounds reportedly came through a window. Special stand-off agents arrived with officers from North Branch, Pine County, Washington County, the MN DNR, Isanti County and also North Branch Fire Department and EMS.
A drone was sent into the house and video showed the victim and the suspect in a room. According to the complaint, upon the K9 unit being sent in, the suspect was convinced to give up.
The scene wasn’t cleared until after 4 p.m. Carda was transported to receive medical care overnight and he was booked into Chisago County Jail Saturday, October 7.
He was charged Monday, October 9 before Judge Seabrooks II, with second degree murder, second degree assault with a weapon and attempted murder. He is held on $2 million bail. Carda’s next court appearance will be October 24.
