Matthew Green (Matt) died at the age of 53 on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, MN due to complications from diabetes. Matthew Edwin Green was born November 14, 1969 to Michael D and Karen H Green (Olson) in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
There was a move to Chisago City, MN when he was four, and then he attended and graduated from Chisago Lakes High School in 1987, with a cadre of loyal friends that he remained close to for the rest of his life. He attended the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Duluth earning a political science degree in 1993.
To say Matt enjoyed a good story is an understatement. Reading from age three, he could often be seen with a book in hand no matter the occasion. His interest in private investigators, the military and history was shaped in his youth by 70’s and 80’s classics like M.A.S.H., Magnum P.I., and Miami Vice and the work of Ian Fleming, Alistair MacLean and Mike Grell. His appetite for media meant a conversation with him could be filled with references, quotes and reviews of a favorite film or recently binged series. An aspiring storyteller, he wrote books which remain unpublished but shared his writing talent with friends and work colleagues. As a dedicated member of the Hash House Harriers running community, Matt led trailevents locally and traveled widely to attend gatherings; building many friendships and living the group's trail running motto “On-On”.
The son of a volunteer firefighter, Matt’s work life built upon that service legacy and expressed his drive to help the public and run towards the emergency. As a community service officer, he answered calls ranging from rabid raccoons to car accidents for the Golden Valley and Plymouth Police Departments. In 2020 he was recognized by Plymouth for assisting with lifesaving measures for a distressed motorist. In his volunteer life, he devoted countless hours to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department Water Patrol.
Those who knew Matt will recall his private and sometimes curmudgeonly nature. They might also recall his grin and distinctive laugh, his love of a good estate sale, his hospitality to visitors and loyalty to friends and family.
The family thanks all who supported Matt during 2023, he appreciated your concern, your companionship, and your love.
Matt is survived by his mother Karen (John) Olson; brothers Erik Green, Daniel Green (Amber Sausen) and Joel (Karen) Green; three nephews, and friends around the world. He was preceded in death by his father Michael D. Green.
Please join in celebrating Matt’s life at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chisago City. Interment at Chisago Memorial Park to immediately follow services.
