Wildcats have inside track at section top spot

After going 3-0 last week, the Chisago Lakes volleyball team is going to wrap up their season with 19 regular season wins and a fourth place finish in the Mississippi 8 Conference. But, perhaps the most important thing for the ‘Cats is that they seemed to have locked up the top seed in Section 4AAA and have a great shot at getting to the state tournament.

Chisago Lakes 3, Coon Rapids 1

The Wildcats took on Coon Rapids in a regular season match after topping the Cardinals 2-1 in a tournament earlier this season.

The result was much the same, as Rebecca Norelius was a stud on offense for the Wildcats as they won 3-1. The sets in which CL won weren’t particularly close, either. CL won 25-17, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-15.

Norelius had 20 kills for the Wildcats while Abby Zins had nine and Kayla Larsen had six.

The team had 10 aces, with Zins leading the way with three, and senior Ella Weinzetl dished out 40 beautiful assists for CL.

Chisago Lakes 3, Big Lake 1

The Wildcats had their penultimate M8C match up against Big Lake on Tuesday, October 10, and stung the Hornets pretty easily, winning 25-19, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-18.

Zins, Norelius and Larsen had another great night for the ‘Cats, combining for 36 kills between the three, with Zins leading the way with 14.

Courtney Preston had four aces for the ‘Cats, Weinzetl had 33 assists and Chisago Lakes didn’t have much of a problem dealing with the Hornet attack.

Chisago Lakes 3, Becker 0

The ‘Cats finished their conference slate with a sweep over the Becker Bulldogs on Thursday, October 12.

Chisago Lakes’ blitzed the Bulldogs early, winning 25-17 and 25-18 in the first two sets before fighting off a tough Becker comeback attempt to wint 27-25 in the third set.

Zins crushed 18 kills for the ‘Cats in the three set win and Norelius had eight. Weinzetl had 31 assists as the ‘Cats cruised.

Section Preview

Chisago Lakes should be awarded the top seed in Section 4AAA, as they are the only team in the section with a winning record at 18-9.

Mahtomedi is 13-13 but the ‘Cats swept them in a tournament in late September.

Hill Murray is 10-15 overall and did send CL to their only section loss so far this year, a 3-0 win in late August, but the ‘Cats were fresh off of beating the Pioneers 2-0 in a tournament just a few days prior, so the teams are even with each other.

Section 4AAA is an eight team section, so the ‘Cats will most likely open against St. Paul Johnson, who was 3-19 on the year and should draw the eight seed.

The game would be played on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
