The Chisago County Historical Society is pleased to announce that a new exhibit is ready for viewing at the History Center in downtown Lindstrom.  Since we will be hosting the traveling exhibit, “We Are Water MN” from the MN Humanities Center for several weeks this summer, we decided to take another look at the Chisago County resorts of the past as well.  

Many may not know that the Chisago Lakes area, with its beautiful lakes and a variety of recreational activities, was a resort destination going back over 140 years.  The completion of the railroad line from Wyoming to Taylors Falls in 1880 gave a real boost to the local tourism industry.

The History Center has photos from over two dozen resorts in the area from the late 1800’s until as late as the 1970’s.  There are also many artifacts from these resorts as well as a nice collection of vintage clothing, fishing tackle and recreational gear.

The items are arranged in several vignettes including a cabin, a kitchen and a dock scene as well as 10 cases of displays.  There is a lot to see!  Highlights of the exhibit are the 1912 guest register from the Dahl House, a 1937 Elto outboard motor and a wonderful display of locally made ice fishing sticks, spearing decoys and spear heads.

The history center organizing team is very thankful to the following CCHS members that loaned items for this exhibit:  Bob Chudek, Neil Gatzow, Michel Nelson, Arild and Betty Hagberg, Tim and Nancy Klammer, Perry Lindberg, Cande Nelson, Natalee Oknich and Dave Shaleen. 

The History Center is presently open on Mon., Tues., Thurs., Friday and Saturday from 12-4. Admission is free although donations are appreciated.  Call 651-257-5310 if you have questions.
