Eugene Overmire

Eugene (Gene) Eldon Overmire, age 89, of North Branch, MN passed away peacefully on Dec. 1, 2024 with family at his side.

Gene was born Dec. 11, 1934 in Mallard, IA, to parents Harry Overmire and Alice (Wunder) Overmire.  Preceded in death by both parents, infant son Thomas Harry. sister Norma (Overmire) Stowell and her husband Jack.  brother James Overmire and his wife Marilyn. brother-in-law Marv Shannon, and nephew Wayne Stowell.

Survived by children Michelle (Paul) Baxter, Mission Viejo, CA; Clayton (Elise) Overmire, Coon Rapids, MN; and Julie (Bill) Berger, Centerville, MN;  grandchildren Jordan (Kimberlee) Berger, North Branch, MN and Simon Berger, Centerville, MN;  great-grandchildren Madelynn Adams-Hall and Adrian Berger, North Branch, MN, and, sister Loretta (Overmire) Shannon, Cedar Rapids, IA/Florence, AZ,  also, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

After high school graduation Gene worked constructing barns throughout Palo Alto County, IA, before answering the call to serve his country.

Gene served his country, honorably, in the famed 82nd Airborne All Americans, as an Army Paratrooper.  During his service he often was asked to play “Taps” on his trumpet at military funerals to honor fallen veterans. He was proud of his military service.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he went to work for Montgomery Ward, working his way up to Computer Systems Operations Management.  He also worked in real estate.  And he worked for the MN State Patrol Capitol Security, in the Operations Center, monitoring security cameras and intercom communications throughout the State Capitol complex, until retirement.

Upon retirement he settled in North Branch, MN. He tinkered daily in his shop doing whatever needed “tinkering” with, never losing that “Old-Man Strength”,  he played golf and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Gene is known for many things. His love for his mother’s apple pie recipe, handed down through many generations.  His generosity, to a fault.  As a quick-witted and winsome smile and   singing.  He was a friend and mentor to many who knew him and was loved by all.

A memorial service is planned for the spring/summer of 2025.  Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Mpls, MN.
