Mora Triangular

The Vikings lost both duals at the Mora Triangular last Thursday, December 12.  They fell to Milaca-Faith Christian 41-26, then succumbed to the host team 50-21.  Jack Baker (121), Aiden Schwartz (139) and Ethan Kester (152) each won both of their individual matches, accounting for 33 of the Vikings’ 47 points on the day.

Maple Grove Tournament

Evan Pommier decisioned Thomas Schlangen of Maple Grove, who is ranked ninth in the state in Class AAA, 8-4 to win the championship of the 172-pound class at the Maple Grove Crimson Invitational on Saturday, December 14.  In all, four of the nine Viking wrestlers placed, and the Vikings finished eighth as a team in the 14-team tournament.  The tournament featured some tough teams and was a good test for the Vikings.

Pommier, who is undefeated at 11-0 so far this season, beat Kallen Dockter by tech fall 17-2, needing just 3:15 to complete the match.  In the quarterfinals, he needed just 2:49 for a 20-2 tech fall over Logan Leonhardt of Champlin Park.  In the semifinals, Pommier pinned Matthew Jackson of South St. Paul in 1:02 to earn a spot in the championship match.  In the championship match against Schlangen, Pommier took a 3-0 lead on a takedown at 1:26 of the first period.  Schlangen was awarded a point on a caution, and Pommier led 3-1 after one period.  Pommier chose bottom in the second period and escaped just 10 seconds into the period to go up 4-1.  His takedown at 3:06 pushed his lead to 7-1.  Schlangen escaped six seconds later, and Pommier led 7-2 after two periods.  Schlangen chose to start on the bottom in the third period.  Pommier was given a stalling warning at 4:59.  Schlangen executed a reversal six seconds later to cut Pommier’s lead to 7-4.  But Pommier needed just eight seconds to escape and go up 8-4 and hung on to claim the championship.

Wrestling Whangdoodles

In their last action before the Christmas break, the Vikings will head to Hinckley-Finlayson High School for a quadrangular with Foley, Grand Rapids, and Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson.  The action gets underway at 5 p.m.
