Section playoffs on the horizon for girls hockey
South St. Paul 8, Chisago Lakes 1
Grace Schulte scored the first goal against eighth-ranked South St. Paul just two minutes into the first period, assisted by Brooke Klemz, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. But the Packers broke the game wide open with five goals in the second period and went on to beat the Wildcats 8-1 at Doug Woog Arena in South St. Paul. The Parkers outshot the Wildcats 28-13 for the game.
Pine City 2, Chisago Lakes 1
The Wildcats dominated Pine City everywhere but on the scoreboard, falling 2-1 to the Dragons last Thursday, January 18 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats outshot Pine City 42-22 for the game, but Dragon goalie Iriss Sanftner stole the game for her team by stopping 41 of the 42 shots she faced. Pine City scored within the first two minutes of each of the first two periods for a 2-0 lead. Kali Hanson scored at 13:32 of the third period to cut the Dragon lead to 2-1, but Pine City hung on for the last three-plus minutes of the game for the win.
Northfield 7, Chisago Lakes 3
The Northfield Raiders broke open a tie game with four goals in the third period – on just four shots - and beat the Wildcats 7-3 at Chisago Lakes Arena on Monday, January 22. The Raider outshot the Wildcats 20-14 for the game.
Brooke Klemz got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a goal at 1:30 of the first period, assisted by McKenna Borene. But the Raiders tied it up just 25 seconds later and scored two more goals to go up 3-1. Ella Perreault put one in the back of the net with just under two minutes to go in the first period to cut the Northfield lead to 3-2. Allison Smothers and Lauren Schmidt picked up the assists. And Alyson Vogelsang scored a power play goal at 10:55 of the second period, assisted by Nora DeVries, to tie the game at 3-3. At the end of the second period, the Wildcats had just nine shots on goal, and Northfield had just 16. In the third period the Raiders made the most of their four shots, scoring four goals, to win by a comfortable margin.
Hockey Hullaballoo
The Wildcats (8-14-0) are nearing the end of the regular season. Tomorrow night, they will head north to the Cloquet Area Recreation Center to play the C-E-C Lumberjacks at 7 p.m. And next Tuesday, January 30, they will host the River Lakes Stars in the Wildcats’ final home game of 2023-2024, with the game slated to start at 5:40 p.m.
Section 4A playoffs will begin on Saturday, February 10.
