Wyoming veteran firefighter retires; street improvements meeting set

Wyoming city officials said goodbye to a 35-year firefighter and swore in the city’s newest peace officer at last week’s council session.

John Hastings Sr. achieved deputy chief rank in the fire department and was applauded for giving an incredible level of commitment to the city in his decades with the department.

Officer Chris Hirsch took his oath to serve the citizens and department.  There was a few moments’ break in the council meeting action to share good wishes and welcome Hirsch and then the council picked up where  it left off.

City Engineer Mark Erichson announced there would be a meeting (Tues. January 23) with neighbors affected by the 2024 street improvements schedule. Wyoming property owners have an opportunity to share concerns and suggestions before any street work bids are sought. (See map of proposed 2024 streets.)

Council also OK’d using a half acre of land on the west side of the public works complex, 7665 Wyoming Trail,  for a dog exercise park.  Fencing and a gravel parking area will get done using park dedication fees paid by developers.  The site has been dubbed “Town Hall Park” because it’s where the old Wyoming Township Hall was situated.

Staff told council this is a frequently asked-for amenity and was included in the 2022 parks system plan.

The assistant public works director, who has been working in recent months as acting director, submitted his resignation.    Council accepted regretfully, and approved 4-1 advertising for a new assistant public works director. Council member Linda Nanko Yeager voted no, without explanation.

The public works department was authorized to put in an order for an F-350 super crew chassis.  Wait time is anywhere from 18 to 30 weeks, council was advised.  The Boyer Ford quote is approximately $53,000.  Administrator Linwood told council the item is budgeted for out of utility revenues.
