CL finishes second in M8C
Mississippi 8 Conference Championship
The Wildcat girls featured two conference champions this year, and both are eighth graders. Annika Hall won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:16.66, and Madison Eagle ascended to the top of the podium in the shot put, with a throw of 53’3.5”. Junior Blake Siefert was the only conference champion for the boys, jumping exactly 6’0” to capture first place in the high jump. Overall, the girls finished second to Monticello, and the boys came in sixth. The Mississippi 8 Conference Championship meet was held Wednesday, May 22 at Zimmerman High School.
Girls
Junior Kaia Osmundson excelled at distance running, finishing second in both the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. Hall came in third in the 3200-meter run. Individually, other top three finishers for the Wildcat girls included junior Ava Bringgold, third in the high jump, and junior Kendra Warren, third in the triple jump. The 4x100 relay team of senior Addy Barrett, Bringgold, eighth grader Addy Griffin and junior Bene’ Smith sprinted to a second place finish.
Boys
The only other top three finish for a Wildcat boy was junior Biruk Killeen, who came in third in the 1600-meter run.
Track Tidbits
The final meet before the state tournament is the Section 7AA meet, held yesterday and this Saturday at Cloquet High School. The meet’s final session starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Wildcat girls’ head coach Nathan Appleby predicted, at the beginning of the season, that the girls could have six to eight individuals and a couple of relay teams in the state tournament. It looks like the girls have a great chance to exceed that total. For the boys, junior Biruk Killeen has a shot at getting to state in all three distance events (800, 1,600, 3,200), based on his best time in each one.
