Rep. bids state House farewell
Chisago County MN Representative Anne Neu Brindley, who is not seeking re-election, spoke on the floor of the House in St. Paul May 20. Members who are retiring from holding office are granted time after session adjourns, to give departing remarks.
Rep. Brindley said she would not talk “politics or policy” in her time allotted. She thanked legislators and staff who helped her with learning the legislative process and to understand the workings at the Capitol.
The “people inside this building” are good, decent people, she explained. She added, “live up to that.”
Neu Brindley shared that she had never been interested in running for office, but in 2017 Bob Barrett was scratched as the Republican candidate when a judge ruled he was lying about his residency. Neu Brindley accepted her party leaders’ request she step up. She’d always been the one to work behind the scenes and help others get elected, she shared.
“A lot has happened in eight years,” she mused, and continued her remarks through tears and laughter at times.
There was no single reason she gave for retiring. She recalled her late husband had great confidence she’d be suited to this work, he passed away shortly after she got started. She has remarried. Her mentor and GOP caucus leader/House Speaker Rep. Kurt Daudt left public office. District lines have been redrawn from the 2020 census taking.
