Chisago Lakes food shelf unveils supershelf, promoting health and community inclusion

The Chisago Lakes Food Shelf celebrated its grand reopening on Tuesday, September 24, after an extensive eight-month renovation to become a SuperShelf. This transformation is part of a statewide initiative to create a more welcoming, accessible, and healthy food experience for clients.

The SuperShelf model reimagines food shelves with a focus on nutritious, appealing food choices, encouraging clients to prioritize health as they select items. The redesigned layout places an emphasis on fresh produce, with clients now starting their shopping experience in an expanded and vibrant produce section.

One client shared their enthusiasm for the changes, saying, “Love the new layout! Starting in the produce is a brilliant idea! Seeing you have fresh basil and tomatoes made my choices in other categories easier because I knew I could make something Italian. And with the Thai basil I found, I got coconut milk and rice noodles for a curry/Asian meal.”

The redesign promotes thoughtful meal planning, as clients are inspired to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets. The food shelf’s expansion into fresh herbs and globally inspired ingredients has been a particularly popular addition.

The project, which began in January 2024, was a collaborative effort among Family Pathways, local volunteers including the Chisago Lakes Good Neighbors Club, and partners such as Chisago County and SHIP. It culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 24, marking a new chapter for the food shelf’s commitment to improving food access in the area.

Family Pathways expresses gratitude for the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. This transformation aligns with the mission of not just providing food but also supporting the overall health and well-being of clients. The response from the community has been incredibly encouraging.

The Chisago Lakes Food Super Shelf, on Liberty Lane,  in Chisago City continues to serve as a vital resource for individuals and families facing food insecurity, offering not only nourishment but also inspiration for healthier living.
