The former U.S. Congressman for Chisago County, Rick Nolan, has died. He was 80 years old. No information was released immediately on cause of death. Service information is pending.
Nolan first held elected office in 1974. About 30 years later, he was elected for the 8th District seat in 2012 when he defeated Chip Cravaack. He held the House seat beating challenger Stewart Mills in 2014 and 2016 but in 2018, Nolan announced he would not seek re-election. Pete Stauber was then elected representative for the 8th District.
The Democrat Party released a statement Friday October 18, with chairman Ken Martin saying “Rick Nolan was a champion for the Northland who fought fiercely to protect working people from corporate interests. From Ely to Duluth, he was an ambassador for the DFL creed that ‘we all do better when we all do better.’ Our thoughts are with his family and all who came to know and love this dedicated public servant.”
