D. Robert Maloney

D. Robert “Bob” Maloney, age 81 of Lindstrom, Minnesota, passed away on August 29, 2024.

Bob was born April 8, 1943 in Minneapolis. Soon after, his mother and he moved to Hancock, Minnesota to stay with his grandparents. Here the seed was planted for the love of farming. It only grew stronger when his father returned from WWII. The family rented a farm for a few years, then moved to Northeast Minneapolis.

In his younger years he would return to his uncle’s farm for summer in Morris, Minnesota. At age 15 he started bagging groceries at Sentercy’s, a local corner store. This store grew after he graduated from Edison High School in 1961. He became employed with Applebaum Store that later became Rainbow Foods.

He moved up through the ranks to become a store manager as a young man. He attended night classes to acquire his associate degree which enabled him to advance to District Store Manager. He spent 35 plus years in the grocery industry.

During this time he had fallen in love with Ginger. They started a family in New Brighton, with three boys, Curt, Dennis, and Doug.

The dream of farming was still alive in him. In 1973 he purchased a hobby farm in Shafer, Minnesota. This lasted a short time. In 1977 they sold this and the house in town. It was time to move, roots were put down on a dairy farm in Lindstrom. They family became larger, in 1980 Mike was born and in 1982 they were blessed with a long awaited baby girl, Connie.

In 1996 the cows were sold and he became a realtor, while continuing raising crops on the farm. He retired from real estate at the age of 63. He continued to farm and began developing land in Lindstrom for his townhome project. Retirement gave him more freedom to enjoy his classic cars, car shows, car club and his many friends. His greatest friendship was with his wife, enjoying dinner, travel, anniversaries (60 of them), and daily life. Sundays were particularly special in that many of them involved visits by friends and family on the family farm in Lindstrom.

He is preceded in death by parents Robert and Ruth Maloney,  son Michael.

Bob is survived by his wife Ginger; children Curt, Dennis (Leslie), Doug (Shanette), Connie (Peter) Alvin; 14 grandchildren Leslie, Allen, Salma, Ruth, Robert, Nick, Spencer, Elizabeth, Jareck, Dolan, Grace, Mia, Kalie, and Kara; two great grandchildren Parker and Maisie; sister Beverly (Thomas) Harren; brother-in-law Paul Miterko; many other relatives and friends.

Visitations will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, 4- 8PM at Grandstrand Funeral Home, and Friday, Sept. 6, 10- 11AM at St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial  Friday, Sept. 6, 11AM at St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church. Arrangements made by Grandstrand Funeral Home.
