After a slow start to the season, dropping a sweep to the South St. Paul Packers  Thursday, August 22 and losing their first two games in the Rush City tournament to Litchfield and Pine River-Backus, the Chisago Lakes volleyball team has turned it around a bit as of late.

They ended the Rush City tournament Friday, August 23 with a 2-0 sweep over potential future section opponent Hill-Murray and then swept Minneapolis Camden (the former Minneapolis Patrick Henry High School) 3-0 Wednesday, August 28.

After graduating some major firepower last year, the ‘Cats will rely on strength in numbers this year, and that certainly was the case against Hill-Murray in CL’s 25-19, 25-19 sweep.

Three girls had more than five kills, with juniors Kayla Larsen and Kate Friedner leading the way with seven and six. Senior middle Sophia Al Khatib had five kills. She also had three aces on the night for CL.

Freshman Kianna Osmundson and junior Morgan Mayer split the setter duties, with Osmundson helping out with 11 assists and Mayer dishing out 10.

The Wildcats kept things rolling when they throttled the Camden Patriots  Wednesday, August 28, winning 25-16, 25-10 and 25-11.

Mariah Cave was the top attacker for CL in this one, with the junior hitting six kills. Friedner also added six kills, while Larsen had four and Al Khatib and Bene Smith each had three.

The aces were aplenty for Chisago Lakes in this one, with Mayer hitting an astounding six of them. Osmundson tallied four of them, and as a team, the ‘Cats had 12 service aces.

Mayer led the way with 13 helpers while Osmundson chipped in nine in split duties again.

The ‘Cats have two more non-conference games to go this week before getting into Mississippi 8 Conference play.

They took on Rush City on Tuesday, September 3 and will travel to St. Paul Johnson Thursday, September 5 before opening with defending conference champs Monticello Tuesday, September 10.
